There were two cars in this lonely place
One for the mayor one for his wife who never really could stay
Some remember when she drove it out of town
They say she’ll ride it back some day when her troubles are all gone

“N” there’s a girl works at the general store
Saw some ladies in a magazine and wanted more and more
But the big times won’t be coming round
Cause the child will be born in the winter
And the father’s nowhere to be found


And the people know the places where the
Lights can touch them
And their faces hold for wonder
With their arms already open


“N” in the corner sits a soldier all of 19
Gave his mind and his legs for a better world, At least that’s how it seemed
But nobody was there when he got home
His woman she left for a walking man and now he sits alone

And as for Jenny well she’s got a P.H.D
But her momma took ill so she came home; a while was all she’d be here
My how the years flow like sand
Time was at most a borrowed gift slipping through her hands


And the people know the places where the
Lights can touch them
And their faces hold for wonder
With their arms already open
